Training and Continuing Professional Development Research Report
Produced by Creative Kernow, in partnership with Creative Skills & SW Screen, October 2004
Recommendations:
In addition to undertaking further quantitative research, Creative Kernow recommends that:
- 1. A strategic media training programme should be developed that:
- (i) is creatively conceived, that is to say; flexible, responsive to Industry needs, offering structured/bursary/peer-led, coherent, accessible, media-specific training to the highest Industry-recognised standards;
- (ii) incorporates business skills training that is media-specific, relevant and offers opportunities for practitioners to network with fellow learners and tutors, at a high level, with clear links to potential work opportunities.
- 2. A “One Stop Shop”/Single Information point should be established to promote training and Continuing Professional Development opportunities.
- 3. Training that is developed should be production-focused.
- 4. A high level pool of Industry Mentors be established, and Companies supported, including financial support, to offer work experience/placement opportunities.
- 5. A pool of high-level trainers be developed to Industry-recognised standards, and encouraged to gain Train the Trainers qualifications.
- 6. More funding is put into providing training for regular and ongoing software upgrade training – of benefit both to practitioners in the media and training/education sectors.
- 7. Young people in schools receive greater encouragement to consider careers in the Media Industry, through education and engagement in media-related projects and are supported through work placements in media sector businesses. (see 4 above)
- 8. An Equal Opportunities monitoring strategy for the sector be developed, including how information should be collated and shared within the County, in order to identify local gaps more effectively - Note whilst BME take up may be in proportion to local numbers, ie small, (although the Sector cannot be complacent) the even lower take up by disabled learners is a matter for concern.
- 9. The Regional Sector Champion (SW Screen) and the Combined Universities of Cornwall (CUC) take the strategic lead in developing a more formalised and supported process for Industry engagement with course development and delivery.
- 10. New resource materials be developed, eg a Producers Pack, and E-learning modules in appropriate subjects, such as Media Law.
