Media Desk UK

The UK Media Desk provide advice and guidance on how to access MEDIA which is a six year programme of the European Union to strengthen the competitiveness of the European film, TV and new media industries and to increase international circulation of European audiovisual product.

BFI

The bfi was established in 1933 to promote greater understanding, appreciation and access to film and television culture. They are the custodians of the largest film archive in the world and are a world leader in film restoration and preservation.

In addition to the archive, they run the internationally renowned National Film Theatre and London Film Festival, the bfi IMAX Cinema, and the world's largest film library and educational resource.

The bfi also releases films in cinema and on video and DVD, publishes books and runs educational programmes.

BBC Training & Development

BBC Training & Development offers a 60% subsidy to freelance/contract workers on a range of camera, sound, lighting, editing and new media training. In addition, through Skillset, the Broadcast, Film, Video and Multimedia industry's Sector Skills Council, some courses carry 60% funding from the Skillset Freelance Training Fund.

Arista

Arista provides expert training and consultancy in the craft of storytelling and the business of film and TV development to industry professionals around the world. Activities include intensive residential Project Development Programmes and Story Development Workshops based in Italy; Introduction to Development Seminars, Screenwriting Craft Specials, and Business of Development Conferences in city centres across Europe; and Bespoke Development Training for international clients around the world.

DV Talent

The National Short Course Training Programme

The National Short Course Training Programme (NSCTP) operates as a self-funding Unit within the National Film and Television School. The NSCTP is a non-profit organisation, which has grown to become the leading provider of high quality, cost effective short courses for the majority of freelancers who work in the film and television industries. Responsible to an Advisory Committee representative of the industry as a whole, and with the support of the industry, the NSCTP is run by a small administrative team, able to respond immediately with an innovative and ever-improving course programme to meet industry training needs.

The Script Factory

Established in 1996, The Script Factory has become one of Europe's leading development organizations working to support screenwriters by finding and developing new screenwriting talent; by supporting the people who work with screenwriters; and by presenting unique and unmissable live screenwriting events with some of cinema's top creative talent.

Brighton Film School

The Brighton Film School is a member of the National Association for Higher Education in the Moving Image (NAHEMI), and works very closely with the Education Committee of the Moving Image Society (The British Kinematograph, Sound and Television Society) offering part-time day and evening courses in 16 mm film production, based at Brighton Business Centre.

The ARVON Foundation

Arvon runs residential creative writing courses at centres in four locations: Devon, Shropshire, Yorkshire and a centre near Inverness which is supported by Arvon but owned by the Moniack Trust. The courses, for people of all ages and backgrounds, provide an inspirational space and dedicated time to practise the art of writing.

Skillset Approved Training Providers

The first Industry Training Providers to have been approved by Skillset are:

FT2

FT2 is the film and television industry's national provider of new entrant training. We train assistants in the departments of art, camera, grips, sound, edit, makeup and hairdressing, props, production (including script supervision and co-ordination) and wardrobe; researchers in factual programming and apprentices in the set crafts of set painting, carpentry and fibrous plastering. We also provide assessment for Skillset Professional Qualifications (NVQs) for freelances working in film and television.

Video Engineering & Training

VET's reputation as a leading media industry training provider is built on 15 years of successful training delivery. Through regular courses or bespoke training we address the skill and knowledge gaps of the modern media practitioner.

Film Design International

The FDI teaches draftsmanship for film and TV. It is intensely practical and specially designed to give a good knowledge of film techniques on the drawing board.

Performing Arts Lab

PAL has an accumulated body of knowledge: To date, PAL has designed and produced 90 Labs with over 3,000 talented, practicing writers, artists, scientists, teachers and industry professionals.

Film Schools:

National Film & TV School

NFTVS – The Industry's leading Film School. Courses are designed for people with at least a little previous experience, even if it's just making their own DV film, most students are in their mid-twenties when they arrive although there is no hard-and-fast rule on age.

London International Film School

The London International Film School has always been completely independent, and remains so following the validation of its course by London Metropolitan University. 2 year MA courses leading up to 35 mm film production. £31,000 total course fees.
